Do this First! Learn How to Use the LockDown Browser

Before using the LockDown Browser for the first time, be sure to view a recorded training or participate in a live training

About the Respondus LockDown Browser in General

  • To use the LockDown Browser, students must install it on their devices, but students have the right to opt out of using it.
  • The LockDown Browser is not recommended for unproctored quizzes or exams.
  • The LockDown Browser only works with quizzes and exams in Canvas, not McGraw-Hill Connect or other platforms.
  • The LockDown Browser works with both Classic and New Quizzes.
  • We are not using Respondus Monitor, which is similar to ProctorU.

Information You Can Provide to Students

  • You’ll find information you can provide to students, including the link to a 3-minute student overview video and the link students need to download the LockDown Browser from your LockDown Browser dashboard. You can access the dashboard via the blue LockDown Browser course link in your Canvas courses. Students can choose the Mac or Windows version from that Download page.

Installing the LockDown Browser - Students and Faculty

  • This page provides the system requirements for the LockDown Browser. Note: There have been several reports of issues with iPads.
  • If you would like to install the LockDown Browser on your UO computer, you will need to create a ticket with User Support Services - Academic Central. They will need the following:
    • The file required to install the LockDown Brower on managed computers.
    • The following is additional information that might be helpful to whoever installs it:
      • The MSI installer uses a "custom action" (VBScript) to set the values RSP_ID and RSP_KEY for the registry keys HKCR > Respondus2 > ldbsk and HKCR > LRRKFLD2. If this custom action is disabled by antivirus software, you must set these values to match the contents of id.txt lines 1 and 2.

Note from George: When I launch the LockDown Browser on my UO computer, I get the Shibboleth login screen. Every time I enter my credentials, it opens a new Shibboleth tab. However, after I click the small Help Center button at the top of the Respondus page and run a system check, it works.

Tips for Success in the Classroom

  • To eliminate as many obstacles as possible in advance, do not use the LockDown Browser with a graded quiz or exam until your students have tried it with a no-stakes quiz.
  • Some students may be unable or unwilling to install the LockDown Browser on their device. Have paper copies of the quiz/exam ready for those students.
  • The LockDown Browser will not allow students to log in if they have Canvas open on their phones.
  • If you would like to experience the LockDown Browser from the students’ perspective, share one of your quizzes or exams with George Reese. He will add you to a Canvas course and your quiz/exam as a student. You would need to install the LockDown Browser on a personal machine or have User Support Services install it on your UO machine (see below). If you're on a personal machine, you will be prompted to install it when you launch the quiz/exam.
